J.I. Packer has a book entitled Knowing God. Yes, it has been a best seller; but besides that he highlights Biblical truths about God, God’s nature, and man’s knowledge of God. The distinction that is being made is between those who have a great deal of knowledge ABOUT God and those who personally know God, through Jesus Christ. He uses Daniel and there three Hebrew boys as the basis for these thoughts. Here are the four thoughts he gives [Packer, J.I.: Knowing God , pp. 27 - 31]
1.) Those who know God have great energy for God.
2.) Those who know God have great thoughts of God.
3.) Those who know God show great boldness for God.
4.) Those who know God have great contentment in God.
George Muller said, “It has pleased the Lord to teach me a truth, the benefit of which I have not lost, for more than for teen years. The point is this: I saw more clearly than ever that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was to have my soul happy in the Lord.”
The great drought amongst believers today is a lack of truly knowing God (Phil. 3:10). We have books, pamphlets, and many other resources that teach strategy and men’s wisdom; but we must get back to the simplicity of quietly spending time in private with our Lord. The time must include God’s Word, prayer, and daily meditation upon God’s Word.
Our children are learning methods and means, but they are missing the MOTIVE for all of those things. This is primarily because we have made much about DOING rather than first BEING. This is evidenced by a misdirected zeal, if any at all. This is seen by how believers speak about God. In their speech they reveal small thoughts about God. Why NOT ask God to use us to conquer this world for Christ? Why not expect that every believer in the New Testament church should be actively seeking to win their city to Christ? We spend time asking God for comfort and fail to see what God wants done and is doing in this world. Why is this? It stems from our little view of God.
Parents, do not seek the easy road in life. In all that we do, we must grow in knowing the Lord more. This will change our way of thinking. Do not ask if your son or daughter played the piano at the recital perfect. Ask how that skill can be used to win the world. Do not ask if your student is making straight “A’s” but how that God-given intellect can be used to get the Gospel to this world! Do not seek to simply train your children in fine arts, but let the fine arts TRULY be nothing more than a perfected tool in the hands of God Almighty so that the world can hear about Jesus Christ.
Where does the change in this mindset begin? It begins when we recognize how little we truly know God and how little time we spend meditating upon His Word. As a result of this humbling admission, we renew our commitment to having our souls happy in the Lord each morning. Do you really know God? Please don’t give the status quo answer. If you really know God, where’s the evidence? What has the Lord taught you about Himself recently in personal devotions? How has that truth been applied practically in your life?
