This song shows to us someone in distress. He describes his nights as times of weeping. The trouble was real, but the Psalmist shows us a few things:
Trouble in life is unavoidable. Man that is born of a woman is of a few days and full of trouble. Whether the troubles are personal or professional, there are troubles. The kind of troubles mentioned here are those that are so severe that sleep is lost. Agony of soul is the result, and this agony leads to supplication. It is something that is not desirable; but once it is past you would not want to change it because it is used of the Lord to draw you closer to Himself.
This is humbling to think. God created the universe. He is not part of the universe! He is greater than the entire universe! He is not bound by time, for He created time. In spite of the incomprehensible greatness of God, He is not so magnanimous that He overlooks our troubles which, comparatively speaking, seem inconsequential to His magnitude.
The Lord not only hears, but He promises to answer. No one in their right mind will ask for the kind of trial that this writer is seemingly experiencing; but this is exactly what we should seek. The difficulties that drive us to Him are the one’s where we come to the end of ourselves, cry to Him, and see Him answer. What a wonderful truth for every believer: “The LORD hath heard…” Rest assured, He cares! Rest assured, He hears! Rest assured, He will answer!
