Waiting for “Superman” Documentary Analysis
Recently, I was able to sit down and watch the documentary entitled Waiting for “Superman.“ It shows the failure of the American public school education system. There is a lot contained within the film, and I would recommend that you sit and watch it. From a Christian’s perspective, here are some thoughts that came to mind:
1. There is a great failure of homes within America. Though, just about everything that our government runs fails, the failure of the home is really the reason why our children are not educated as they should be. Biblically, the training of children is the responsibility of the parents. Unfortunately, what parents should be is no longer a priority.
2. The devaluation of the Word of God and the clear Godly principles has attributed to the demise of our society – be it education or anything else. The Word of God teaches us what we are to be as parents and leaders.
3. The seemingly pragmatic approach that is taken in the documentary shows that increasing education hours and the commitment of teachers sets students on a path to make it to and through college. Though that is great, what about increasing the importance of Biblical roles such as parenting. Increased debt has caused a necessity for more work outside of the home; and parents have given their children over to others to raise.
4. Community is important, but it should not be of greater importance than the first institution that the Lord created.
There have been so many times that I have thought, “We need some kind of housing for students who live in horrible situations.” I think that maybe if we had those kids for the entire week; then maybe they would not have to go back into the homes that we pick them up from on Sundays. The truth is that what I am saying is, “Let me be the parent”; but that is not what God designed. What we really need is a revival of among Bible-believing Christians. We need people to turn back to God and His Word.
The Gospel must be preached. Souls must be saved. Disciples must be made. We must get back to the first works of the New Testament church. If we truly believe that Jesus Christ is the answer, then we must be about our Father’s business. Our children are failing, because we are failing. We are failing because we have failed to yield ourselves to God and His Word. We fail to yield ourselves because of good old fashioned sin. Jesus Christ and His Word are the answer. May God help us to not only give the right answers, but to yield ourselves to do the right thing. Get back to the Word of God today!
