The heart is deceitful!

In preparation for the lesson at Hope tonight, Jeremiah 17:9 has come to the center of our study.  The Word of God says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”  Here are three questions to ponder:

1.)  Who sees the heart?  (Jeremiah 17:10, Genesis 6:5)  Of course, the answer is the LORD.

2.)  What does He say about the heart? (Jeremiah 17:9, Ecclesiastes 9:3, Mark 7:21) This is clear.  I cannot see my heart, nor can any other human.  Spiritually-speaking, we cannot see the heart of man; but clearly the Lord can.  He has some choice words about our heart.

3.)  Will your heart stay or stray? (Jeremiah 17:5 – 7) The key to understanding this passage is the context.  The question that must be answers is, “Will you trust in yourself [specifically the guidance you feel in your heart], or will you trust in the LORD?” (Proverbs 3:5 – 6)

We are not to follow our hearts.  We are to guide our hearts.
